The Story of Katie g. Jewellery

Hi I am Katie, the designer behind Katie g. Jewellery. Discover the world of Katie g. Jewellery, where nature's irregularities inspire personalised and handcrafted jewellery.

The Sculptor Behind the Creations of Katie g. Jewellery

Katie was raised in Cornwall, England, with its picturesque beaches & jagged cliffs. As a child, she ran barefoot on the beaches, collecting treasures with her brother, and chased hermit crabs along the rocky cliffs.

Her grandfather was Austrian, and she had always felt a deep connection to his heritage. At age of 5, Katie’s father moved the family to Austria for work. Austria had a different beauty than Cornwall -  stunning natural landscapes like lakes, mountains, forests, and hills had a profound impact on Katie.. These contrasting landscapes, brimming with natural beauty, are the very heart of Katie's inspiration, but how did she become a goldsmith?

As a child, Katie always loved to adorn herself with everything she could find in her mother’s closet. She also enjoyed working with her hands. Drawn to the creative side of life, she had the opportunity to take up sculpting. She found great joy in the process of creating by hand.

It was a a job fair that Katie was first introduced to sculpting with metals. Initially, she wanted to create large sculptures but as she gained experience, she realised that she could combine her love for sculpting and adornment in the field of jewellery design. By merging the two, she had found her passion.

An Education in Goldsmithing

Katie's artistic journey began in the heart of Vienna amidst the esteemed halls of a traditional goldsmith academy. Here, she diligently mastered her craft focusing on precision and immaculate techniques to create perfectly formed pieces. While valuable skills were gained, something deep down yearned for a place with more artistic expression.

Katie continued her studies at the Alchimia Scuola di Gioielleria Contemporanea in Florence, where her style flourished. This free-spirited, creative environment allowed her to break the boundaries set by her former more formal education.

Surrounded by patinated walls, vast history, and an artisan atmosphere, Florence itself soon became the third environment to shape her style. The irregular beauty of the natural world was reflected in all of her work; She started to value each piece as a symbol of individualism, evolving into something more beautiful with each wear.

How Katie Established Herself as a Goldsmith

After studying the art and craft of jewellery making in Vienna and Florence, Katie began applying all that she’d learned in a professional setting. She began working for a jeweller in Vienna initially in sales. While gaining experience in the field, she spent much of her free time developing her own collection. From these early artistic days came Katie’s very first collection, the cutting edge rings, which still are a staple in the Katie g. Jewellery collection. Her work began gaining attention, and she soon found success.

The Dawn of Katie g. Jewellery

As Katie developed her craft as a goldsmith, she soon met, fell in love with, and married Georg. During their honeymoon, they made the decision to launch a business together, although they’d always joked that working together would not be the best idea! After their honeymoon, they began to take steps to make their new dream a reality.

It became a natural decision for the newlyweds. Georg was ready for a change and a move away from the work he’d been doing. Katie was ready to grow her initial success into something even more impactful and personal.

The g in Katie g.

The letter G in Katie g. Jewellery is an essential reminder that the business is a joint venture between a couple that’s still very much in love after working together for nearly a decade. While the “G” actually stands for katie’s Surname, she often jokes that the “G” stands for Georg, Katie’s husband, who handles the business operations while she focuses on eye-catching designs and jewellery production.

The Launch of Katie g.

In 2015 Katie g. Jewellery was born, and the couple couldn’t be happier with their decision.  They design and sell their pieces from their atelier in Vienna, Austria, for customers all around the world.

Pouring Her Love of Nature Into Her Craft

In nature, nothing is completely symmetrical or precise.

What truly makes nature stand out are the little flaws and asymmetries. The jagged, irregular lines of a mountain range or rugged coastline create honest beauty. This very essence is what inspires each design.

On a piece of jewellery like a ring, it’s no different. When a ring is made to perfection, normal daily wear marks may appear as blemishes that take away from its beauty. But Katie sees blemishes as a mark of beauty and personality, not flaws. The irregular surface textures she applies to most of her pieces, age beautifully as they incorporate any wear marks, making them increasiingly more personal, the longer you wear your Katie g. Jewellery.

“The irregular beauty seen in what nature provides is the driving inspiration for my designs. A big reason why we love irregular textures is because no piece is the same. Over time, a perfectly polished piece will lose its initial shine, but irregular pieces will age beautifully.”
